Description

These Grilled Hot Honey BBQ Smoked Sausage Skewers combine smoky turkey sausage with sweet and spicy hot honey BBQ sauce, grilled to perfection alongside colorful bell peppers and red onions. Perfect for a flavorful and easy-to-make main course served over rice.

Ingredients

Scale

Sausage Skewers

  • 13 ounces smoked turkey sausage
  • 3 bell peppers, chopped into pieces
  • 1 red onion, chopped into pieces
  • kosher salt and pepper, to taste

Sauce

  • ¼ cup your favorite BBQ sauce
  • 2 tablespoons hot honey

For Serving

  • chopped fresh cilantro, for serving
  • rice, for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat Grill: Preheat your grill to high heat, preparing it for cooking the skewers evenly.
  2. Prepare Sausage: Cut the smoked turkey sausage into 1-inch pieces to match the size of the chopped peppers and onions for uniform grilling.
  3. Assemble Skewers: Thread 4 to 5 pieces of sausage onto each skewer, alternating with pieces of chopped bell peppers and red onion until the skewer is full.
  4. Make Sauce: Stir together the BBQ sauce and hot honey until well combined to create a sweet and spicy glaze.
  5. Brush Skewers: Brush the prepared BBQ and hot honey mixture generously all over the assembled skewers.
  6. Grill Skewers: Place the skewers on the hot grill and cook for 10 to 12 minutes, turning every 2 to 3 minutes to ensure even cooking and caramelization.
  7. Finish and Serve: Optionally brush additional sauce over the skewers once cooked. Sprinkle chopped fresh cilantro on top and serve the skewers over cooked rice.

Notes

  • To prevent sticking, lightly oil the grill grates before placing the skewers.
  • You can substitute smoked turkey sausage with smoked chicken or pork sausage based on preference.
  • Adjust the amount of hot honey depending on your desired heat level.
  • If wooden skewers are used, soak them in water for at least 30 minutes prior to grilling to avoid burning.
  • Serve with a side salad or grilled vegetables for a complete meal.
