Ingredients
Scale
Cookie Dough
- 1 box vanilla cake mix (I used Betty Crocker)
- ⅓ cup vegetable oil
- 2 eggs
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- Green gel food coloring
Coating
- ⅓ cup confectioners sugar
- ⅓ cup cornstarch
Topping
- Candy hearts or sprinkles
Instructions
- Prepare Baking Sheet: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside to prevent sticking and ensure even baking.
- Mix Dough: In a large bowl, combine the vanilla cake mix, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract. Add green gel food coloring and mix thoroughly until the color is evenly distributed throughout the dough.
- Chill Dough: Place the dough in the refrigerator for 20 minutes. This step firms up the dough, making it easier to handle and enhancing flavor blending—do not skip this step.
- Preheat Oven & Prepare Coating: Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. In a small bowl, mix together the confectioners sugar and cornstarch to prepare the coating.
- Form Cookies: Remove the chilled dough from the refrigerator. Scoop the dough into balls (using a cookie scoop is recommended for uniform size) and roll each ball thoroughly in the confectioners sugar mixture until fully coated.
- Shape Cookies: Place the coated dough balls onto the prepared baking sheet. Gently press down the top of each ball with the bottom of a glass to slightly flatten them, taking care not to press too hard.
- Add Toppings: Gently press a candy heart or sprinkle onto the top of each cookie ball for decoration.
- Bake: Bake the cookies in the preheated oven for 9 minutes. Be careful to not overbake, as the cookies should remain soft and moist.
- Cool: Allow the cookies to rest on the baking sheet for 3 minutes after removing from the oven, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Serve: Serve the cookies warm or at room temperature for best flavor and texture.
Notes
- Use a cookie scoop to portion dough evenly and save time.
- Chilling dough is essential to ease handling and improve flavor blending.
- Avoid overbaking to keep cookies soft and moist, ideally baking for 9 minutes.
- Store cookies at room temperature in an airtight container for 5-7 days.
- Freeze completely cooled baked cookies in a freezer bag for 2-3 months; thaw to room temperature before serving.
