Description

Tennessee Onion Dip is a warm and creamy appetizer featuring caramelized sweet onions, a blend of cheeses, and aromatic herbs baked to bubbly perfection. Perfect for serving with crackers, crostini, or bread, this dip offers a rich and savory flavor that’s ideal for parties and gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 2 large chopped sweet onions (Vidalia preferred)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 4 ounces softened cream cheese
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded smoked gouda cheese
  • Chopped parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit to prepare for baking the dip later.
  2. Cook Onions: Heat 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter in a large oven-safe skillet over medium heat. Add the 2 large chopped sweet onions and cook them, stirring occasionally, until they become soft and tender, about 15 minutes.
  3. Combine Ingredients: Remove the skillet from heat and add 1 cup mayonnaise, 4 ounces softened cream cheese, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon dried thyme, ½ teaspoon salt, 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese, and 1 cup shredded smoked gouda cheese. Stir all the ingredients together thoroughly to combine.
  4. Bake Dip: Place the skillet in the preheated oven and bake the mixture for 25 minutes or until the dip is bubbly and heated through.
  5. Garnish and Serve: Remove from oven, garnish with chopped parsley, and serve warm with crackers, crostini, or bread for dipping.

Notes

  • Storing Leftovers: Transfer any leftovers to an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 2 days. This dip does not freeze well, so avoid freezing.
  • Reheating: Reheat the dip gently in the microwave or in the oven set to low heat until the cheese is melted and the dip is warmed through.
  • Onion Choice: Sweet onions like Vidalia work best for this recipe to provide a natural sweetness and mellow flavor.
  • Cheese Variations: You can substitute smoked gouda with other smoked cheeses or use all cheddar if preferred.
  • Serving Suggestions: Serve with a variety of dipping options like crackers, toasted baguette slices, or fresh vegetable sticks for contrast.
